Life’s good for deliveryman Doug Heffernan, until his newly widowed father-in-law, Arthur, moves in with him and his wife Carrie. Doug is no longer the king of his domain, and instead of having a big screen television in his recently renovated basement, he now has a crazy old man.
When the shift supervisor leaves for heart surgery, Doug is selected for the position, but despite the promotion, he hates the job. On top of that, Deacon feels he was overlooked because he's black.
A government holiday is anything but for Carrie, who spends it cleaning her kitchen, and for Doug, who spends it golfing--or trying to--with friend Ray Barone.
Doug is distraught by Carrie's indifference when she learns that his new trainee is a beautiful woman, so he tries to make her think something's going on.
Carrie asks Doug to join her at a dinner party for a Japanese client. But when he arrives ravenous after not eating all day, he discovers there's no dinner and tries to eat whatever he can find.
Doug and Carrie try desperately to ship Arthur off to friends for the weekend so they can enjoy some intimate time together, but no one's eager to take him.
Doug is ecstatic when Arthur moves out of the basement and gets his own apartment following an argument between the two men. But Carrie is saddened by her father's move and wants Doug to ask him to return.
