From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sam B. Hardy (March 21, 1883 – October 16, 1935) was an American stage and film actor who appeared in feature films during the silent and early sound eras. He died of intestinal problems. He was also known as Samuel Hardy. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Hardy attended Yale but left there to become an actor on stage. He entered the world of film with Biograph Studios. Hardy became ill while he was working in the film Shoot the Chutes, starring Eddie Cantor. He did not survive emergency surgery at a hospital.

While still a teenager, he joined the laboratory for young actors of the production company Vides by Franco Cristaldi and studied acting under Alessandro Fersen. He made his stage debut in 1960 in L'arialda, directed by Luchino Visconti, and his film debut in the 1961 adventure Romulus and the Sabines by Richard Pottier. He had several leading roles in the first half of the 1960s, including Marco Bellocchio's Fists in the Pocket and Jean-Luc Godard's Les Carabiniers, then he was mainly cast in supporting roles. Van Dyke II (Woody) (March 21, 1889 – February 5, 1943) was an American film director and writer who made several successful early sound films, including Tarzan the Ape Man in 1932, The Thin Man in 1934, San Francisco in 1936, and six popular musicals with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. He received two Academy Award nominations for Best Director for The Thin Man and San Francisco, and directed four actors to Oscar nominations: William Powell, Spencer Tracy, Norma Shearer, and Robert Morley. Known as a reliable craftsman who made his films on schedule and under budget, he earned the name "One Take Woody" for his quick and efficient style of filming.
